Kawakami created Glass Rakan (15 disciples of the Budha) after having been greatly inspired by the stone statues of Gohyaku Rakan (500 discples of the Budha) that he had encountered in Hojo, Hyogo Prefecture some 50 years ago. his statues of the disciples, which showing different facial expressions, seem to overflow with kindness, as if possessing a healing power.
